Yoga with its mystical enigma and allure proves to be a rather difficult subject to discuss in today’s modern world. It is sad that the beauty of yoga has somehow lost its brilliant luster, tarnished by the fast paced lifestyles of today’s globalization. It is amazing to see the whole philosophy fuelling yoga’s methodology being reduced to a simple concept, justified by the need to make it easy for the layperson to understand. Most westerners might find the contents of yoga to be rather complicated and hard to relate to. It can be disastrous to assume a fake understanding of such a complicated subject and spreading it as the absolute truth. Yoga is mainly perceived as a physical activity in the western part of the world. Yoga has been cherished as a form of physical activity that has some beneficial effects on the mind in creating peace and serenity.

In reality, yoga practice is a very sacred journey that has roots buried deep within the scriptures of an ancient Holy book. Indians understand that is not a mere physical activity, but yoga is part of a spiritual development that is realized through a systematic and disciplined physical approach. The westerner’s viewpoint that yoga is a physical activity is very wrong and distorted. The hidden intricacies of this mysterious practice with its strange looking symbols may be successful in making the average westerner aware that there are more to yoga than physical moves alone, but nevertheless they are often misunderstood. Ironically, it is practiced as a popular form of sports. Additionally, people who desire inner tranquility would often find this practice to be beneficial. It also does a good job attracting those who wish to obtain inner peace and balance in the midst of the hectic modern lifestyle.

This perception is often strengthened by the various claims made by the so called yoga masters. The numerous amount of fatal errors found in the practice of yoga outside of India shows that this art has been widely misunderstood at large. A closer look revealed that these errors were caused by the cultural influence of each race. In order to truly understand this concept moments of quiet, peaceful times are necessary to contemplate on this philosophy, and that is certainly an element that is absent in the hectic lifestyle of the western civilization. While meditation is an integral part of the practice, the westerners with their ever busy lifestyles certainly do not posses time for such luxuries. Westerners have different goals and priorities, and the insatiable desire to accumulate massive amounts of wealth certainly has no place in the system of values among the Hindus. It is impossible to attain true wisdom that is aligned with the real philosophy of yoga in this state of mind. To gain maximum benefits from each meditation session, one needs to spare time and exercise tremendous patience in carrying out each essential part of the practice. This is what the westerners lack. The west seems cursed with the obsession to pursue the goal of building better lives in the form of lavish lifestyles and not in the philosophical way.

Yoga becomes a stylish endeavor instead of a spiritual experience. There are plenty of materials promoting it as a form of sports; you can practice yoga anywhere and anytime you want. Even the famous people who are fake yoga gurus have garnered a lot of support from their disciples. The growing influence of this unhealthy philosophy is attributed to the disciples who are loyal in spreading the word about the advantages of adopting this crooked form of yogic philosophy.
